Mission

EcoMedia Lab is an interdisciplinary research-creation studio at Indiana University dedicated to bioart, ecoart, and experimental media practices that investigate living systems, environmental change, and speculative futures. The lab brings together artistic inquiry, ecological thinking, scientific reasoning, and emerging technologies to explore how humans, nonhumans, environments, and media shape one another. Through installation, video, performance, sound, biological materials, microscopy, fieldwork, and interdisciplinary collaboration, EcoMedia Lab supports projects that engage the complexities of more-than-human life and imagine new ways of sensing, relating, and responding to a changing world.

The lab is rooted in The Media School’s commitment to creative practice, critical inquiry, and technological experimentation, and broadens the school’s strengths in interdisciplinary production and critical studies into ecological, place-based and material practices. The lab also complements IU’s Environment, Society, and Sustainability Institute’s emphasis on environmental education, research, and public engagement by foregrounding the arts as a vital mode of ecological inquiry and environmental communication.
